How many pass e2fsck

I get e2fsck 1. Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes and then a very long pause How do I get some idea of activity? Ideally a count of completed items vs total and some kind of ETA.

I suspect there is an early phase of Pass 1 that doesn't update the completion bar, but on really large disks takes a significant amount of time. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Fsck will manage the filesystem check- ers so that only one of them will display a progress bar at a time.

From E2FSCK 8 : -C fd This option causes e2fsck to write completion information to the specified file descriptor so that the progress of the filesystem check can be monitored.

This option is typically used by pro- grams which are running e2fsck. If the file descriptor specified is 0, e2fsck will print a com- pletion bar as it goes about its business. This requires that e2fsck is running on a video console or terminal. Improve this answer. Warner Warner It looks like your man page is for a different version of e2fsck. I'll post an answer from my version, but it's very close and your answer was enough to make me read the right bit of the man page.

Thanks very much! Ah, good call-- I've updated. You're welcome. Check a partition You should be root to execute this command.

So, login to root, unmount the filesystem, and perform the check as shown below. Automatic repair using e2fsck Using -p option, you can instruct e2fsck to check and automtically repair all issues without prompting you for confirmation.

Check only no change using e2fsck Using -n option, you can instruct e2fsck to perform check only. Display a progress bar during e2fsck check Using -C option, you can specify a file descriptor, where e2fsck will send the output, which is useful when you are doing e2fsck from a shell script.

It is only for backward compatibility. Use this when the main superblock is corrupted. Use mke2fs -n option to see additional backup superblocks. This option forces e2fsck to use only the specified superblock blocksize. If the superblock is not found, e2fsck will terminate with a fatal error.

If any bad blocks are found, they are added to the bad block inode to prevent them from being allocated to a file or directory. If this option is specified twice, then the bad block scan will be done using a non-destructive read-write test. This option is typically used by programs which are running e2fsck.

Not useful except to debug e2fsck command itself. Does this by reindexing them, or by sorting and compressing directories for smaller directories, or for filesystems using traditional linear directories.

The description of the phases of e2fck I could find says Phase 5: Check Cylinder Groups - checks free blocks and the used inode maps for consistency So those numbers are probably blocks that e2fsck can't tell whether should be free or not.
