He has been a champion of jazz studies research worldwide, developing a number of international conferences, publications and collaborative research projects. CHIME explores the uses and re-uses of different types of heritage through the study of jazz and improvised music festivals, and examines how changing relationships between music, festivals and cultural heritage sites renegotiate established understandings and uses of heritage.

My research work deals specifically with music and its place within the creative industries, from the packaging of popular music to the iconic representations of jazz artists. I have also played an important role in promoting research as an enterprise and knowledge transfer activity, working closely with a variety of academic and professional bodies and disseminating my work in different contexts.
