Starting in , the FDA has issued warning letters to companies notifying them that marketing DMAA-containing products violates the law. When we find products containing DMAA during facility inspections, we discuss our concerns with firms and give them an opportunity to voluntarily recall and destroy these violative products.
Most companies warned are no longer distributing products with DMAA. When firms have chosen not to comply voluntarily, the FDA has taken other actions. Also in , the FDA seized DMAA-containing products from Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals; a federal district court ruled in April that the products were adulterated and ordered them condemned and forfeited to the United States for destruction.
In , the U. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed the lower court ruling, finding that DMAA is not a dietary ingredient and is not generally recognized as safe, and condemning and forfeiting the seized articles containing DMAA. Caffeine is especially harmful to children, particularly to their developing cardiovascular and neurologic systems.
Pediatricians recommend that children and teens even avoid caffeine in lower doses, such as in soda. Unfortunately energy drinks are heavily marketed to teens and more than one third of teens use them. Energy drinks are especially dangerous when teens mix them with alcohol. In the past few years energy drinks have become a big business. Since spending on products like energy drinks, shot and mixes increased by more than 60 percent.

These serious—and sometimes fatal—safety risks prompted Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical manufacturer that first developed the drug, to remove DMAA from the market in the s. Health authorities in at least seven countries have banned dietary supplements containing DMAA. View the articles to the right for more information. The Defense Department removed these and all the products listed above containing the same active ingredient — DMAA — from all military bases.
It is unclear at this point what action the FDA will take. The active ingredient DMAA dimethylamylamine is promoted to increase workout energy and efficiency.
