What do cumberland turtles eat

I've looked for some and can't find any. I don't mind ordering them online anyway. Our pet stores are rubbish, I had to have reptifrog granules ordered from our local pet store for my frogs coz we couldn't get them round here either and it took 3 weeks for them to get here..

Anyone who has observed pond turtles like sliders, cooters or painted turtles in the wild has seen them hang out on the surface of the water, not as often as basking, but often. Research detailed in the pond slider Trachemys scripta section of Ernst and Lovich's Turtle's of the US and Canada, says that a turtles body temp will raise at this time, while the turtles take in the suns rays directly. Like getting a sunburn while swimming at the beach, in the water, for anyone like me who has had this happen..

I thought it was pretty cool myself. If you have a local pets at home they sell Zoo Med growth and maintenance and your local fish shop will sometimes sell turtle foods. Our pets home don't sell anything like that unfortunitely..

They don't deal with reptiles at our local pets home either, which is a shame.. I get all my turtle food from pets pad at rawcliffe, they sell everything for turtles but not baby turtles food. I'm ordering from zoo med, I use a lot of zoo med stuff anyway and need some new basking islands so i'll just order the baby turtle food at the same time. Order a small container if you won't be buying any other hatchlings soon, as there's probably a million pellets in there and your turtle will outgrow that pellet size rather quickly.

Do you mean the King British ones? Ive found those very good with my map how do you order from Zoo Med?

They also have black blotches of highly variable size on several of the plastral scutes, and a mottled pattern or set of horizontal lines on the rear of the thighs. The carapace is greenish with a narrow yellow line in each of the pleural scutes. See "Conservation and Management" for additional discussion.

Biology: Yellow-Bellied Sliders inhabit all manner of freshwater habitats in southeastern Virginia, from lakes and ponds to rivers, ditches, marshes, bays, and swamps. The Cumberland slider has been found only in the Holston River. Preferred habitat has an organic substrate, aquatic vegetation, and basking sites. The activity period is April through October. Of the known captures, These turtles overwinter in water in soft organic substrate, in muskrat burrows, and by simply sitting on the bottom.

This species is omnivorous as adults and mostly carnivorous as juveniles. The following items have been found in their feces: unidentified plant stems and leaves, tulip tree Nyssa spp. Other prey include algae, seeds and stems of numerous vascular plants, gastropods, insects, other arthropods, crayfish, crustaceans, tadpoles, fish, and vertebrate carrion Parmenter and Avery, Predators of adults are raccoons Procyon lotor and humans, who shoot them while basking, kill them on roads, and fracture shells with boat propellers.

Hatchlings and juveniles are eaten by large fish, some snakes, raccoons, and wading birds. Eggs in nests are eaten by raccoons, striped skunks Mephitis mephitis , crows Corvus spp. In , A. Hundley pers. Mating occurs in spring, fall, and winter months Gibbons and Greene, Mating has not been recorded in Virginia, but nest records are 18 May to 25 June. Females construct an oval-shaped nest chamber in a variety of soil types. Nest construction usually occurs at dusk and at night.

Clutch size ranged from 6 to 15 ave. Eggs averaged Egg length, width, and mass are positively related to the size of the female; in general the larger the female the larger the egg. Clutch size is not related to female size in the Virginia sample. The laboratory incubation period was days and hatchlings emerged 19 August to 9 September. In South Carolina, hatchlings overwinter in the nest and emerge the following spring Gibbons and Nelson, Overwintering in the nest probably occurs in Virginia in some locations and in some years.

A pair of newly hatched Siamese twins, joined at the center of the plastron, was found in Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge on 25 September Padgett, Trachemys scripta is an abundant turtle in many lakes and wetlands in southeastern Virginia and in most ponds and lakes in northern Virginia C.

Ernst, pers. Nothing is known of T. Growth of juveniles in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge from nest emergence until their first winter was mm ave. Sliders may live as long as 30 years in natural populations in South Carolina Gibbons, Hatchings will look like their adult counterparts, but their carapace will be green and their plastron will be yellow.

There is a yellow bar behind each eye, and it can be wide or thin. If you have a juvenile Cumberland Slider, you can house him in a gallon tank, but an adult would need a 55 gallon tank. You can house a pair of adults in a 75 gallon tank. They can also be housed outdoors.

UVB lighting also needs to be provided to help your turtle stay healthy, and you can turn the lights off at night to mimic natural cycles. In terms of substrate, these turtles do well with fine pea gravel or reptile sand. If you choose to use gravel, it should be big enough that your turtle will not be able to eat it.

Your turtle should be able to enjoy plenty of room for swimming, and he should be able to completely submerge himself and swim around.
